Pop Rocks and Coke: And the winner is...

A lot of things could be deemed funny. Knock-knock jokes, for one, are a staple to the art of comedy. "That's what she said" is fairly laughable as well. And if you're really stuck for a good joke, run over to your local Chinese take-out restaurant - or a Smith dining hall on any Asian-themed night - grab a fortune cookie and add to the end of your fortune, "in bed.

Northampton is a notoriously quirky town, and spring break offers students the opportunity to explore off-campus activities without the stress of midterms. For those of you staying Smith-side for break, here's a guide to eclectic downtown - places people drive cross-country to see, all within walking distance of JMG.

Media's focus on body image, eating disorders distasteful

3/10/10 - I can hardly watch television or read a magazine without seeing some celebrity's gaunt figure or model's emaciated frame blowing up the screen or page.

While "emaciated" seems like a harsh adjective used to describe members of the entertainment industry, I want to know why eating disorders have so recently been connected to celebrities.

The goal of a good live album is to completely immerse the listener by recreating the concert experience. You should be able to close your eyes and be transported away to the front row of a sold-out venue. A live album should capture the spontaneity, intimacy and energy of a performance.

Human beings often need boatloads of motivation to make it to the gym. We also like foods that come in plastic wrappers and beverages that taste way too good to contain zero calories and zero sugar. According to Christopher McDougall, human beings are also born to run.

On Saturday, March 6, British alternative rock band Muse stormed the stage of the Boston, Mass., TD Garden and played a set so phenomenal it almost dared the audience to leave unsatisfied. Judging by the vast number of audience members filing out of the arena after the encore singing bits of the band's more popular singles and raving about the spectacle they'd experienced for the last 90 minutes, I'm sure Muse kept up their end of the bargain.

03/02/10 - It's unfortunate, but realistically many college students cannot afford to go away to some exotic place like Cancun, Mexico for spring break. Spring break seems to be full of loud, crazy, pump-up music that is perfect for a night out or just dancing by the pool during a beautiful sunny day.

Oscar fashion recap: the good, the bad, the horrendously ugly

03/09/10 - For many people the Oscars day mean absolutely nothing. While celebrities and mega-stars were getting primped and styled for the famous award show, most of the American public, myself included, were just enjoying a regular, lazy Sunday.

Although you many have missed who won what award, and the speeches and presentations that accompanied them, the most entertaining aspect of the Oscars- or any awards show for that matter- is the fashion! To quote Joan Rivers, "Who wore what?"

Sometimes I find myself staring, mouth agape, at the breathtaking gowns and flashy jewelry, and other times I can't help but say, "What the hell was (insert celebrity's name) thinking?" Going through countless pictures from the Oscars I can safely say that I have accumulated quite a list of horribly dressed people.

As lovers of good film, we could not let this year's Oscar nominees for Best Film go unnoticed - especially given the year's many nominees - and so we discussed, debated and diverged over several of the nominees with film students Sonia Brand-Fisher '13, Sylvia Altreuter '12 and Claire Fleischer '12.

Shutter Island is a dark, terrifying, and suspenseful thriller, that will leave you asking one question when all is said and done: "What has director, Martin Scorsese, done to corrupt my innocent mind?" This film is intelligently conceived as well as an excellent adaptation to the fictional novel by Denis Lehane, which I highly recommend.
