Replacing the consistently broken gate by Gebbie is a "frustrating" use of campus funds says Physical Plant Trades Manager Henry White. Since the start of classes, White and his crew have had to replace the gate over thirty-five times. "It's frustrating when we see it in the morning… and we have to replace it," says White, "knowing that the shop resources and college's resources could be better spent.
The men of Wheaton College pledged commitment against violence against women and children by participating in the White Ribbon Campaign throughout the week of Nov. 10. They have been doing a program called "These Hands Don't Hurt" in which the men make a promise never to harm women or children.
In accordance with the campus-wide initiative to increase sustainability and community on campus, the Hood Café in Balfour-Hood has undergone recent changes. The recent changes are a direct result of the suggestions and input of faculty, staff, and students, who are pushing for a more sustainability-sensitive and community-friendly environment in the café.
President Crutcher visited the SGA Senate meeting on Nov. 11 to address several issues. First mentioned was the housing situation. "Housing. An issue that has plagued us for years," he said, and pledged the construction of a new modular residence hall, which the Board of Trustees recently approved.
Students were entertained and educated at the third annual Sex Toy party on Nov. 10. The event was held by the Sexual Health Awareness Club (SHAC). The goal of the event, according to SHAC President David Lopes '10 was "to reduce the stigma around sexuality issues," and bring awareness to the health aspect of sexual activity.
Students are once again encouraged to nominate staff members, departments, and teams for annual awards. The awards to be given out this year include the President's Award for Outstanding Service, which is given to up to four individual staff members, the Vision of Service award, which is given to a department or team, and the Gladys Kelley Memorial Award for Professional Development, a self-nominated grant.
November 23, 1946 V-day, Thanksgiving break has always been a huge concern to Wheaton students even way back in 1946 when Wheaton was as single sex campus. V-day was a chance for the college females to leave the campus and return to their home communities and be in the presence of men! .
