Trustees approve $1,824 tuition increase for 2011

The Board of Trustees approved a three percent increase of tuition that will raise the current 2009-2010 year cost of $49,440.00 to $51,264 for the 2010-2011 academic year. In his address to the campus President Ronald Crutcher said, "The decision to set the tuition, room and board rate is never undertaken lightly.

O'Riordan challenges Padulo's take on Avatar and Oscars

After reading Dominic Padulo's article slandering the sci-fi epic Avatar almost three weeks back, I felt slightly angered at the lack of legitimacy for this brutal bashing, however I didn't dwell. Recently, Padulo spoke of the Academy Award nominees for the what-were-then upcoming Oscar show March 7, 2010.

CSII construction scheduled to begin at end of spring semester

After over a year of halted construction and the accumulation of funds the Board of Trustees approved the Center for Scientific Inquiry and Innovation (CSII) during their meetings on Feb. 19 and Feb. 20. Construction on the three-floor building will begin later this spring while the current science center will remain in use until completion then undergo renovations of its own.

Optional cellphone drop-off endorsed by Honor Code Commission to quell cheating

Starting this week, the Honor Code Commission will place bins at the entrance to every classroom in which students can voluntarily place their cell phones during tests to remove the temptation of cheating. College Hearing Board Chair and Co-Chair of the Honor Code Commission Stephanie Funt '11 said that, although there is no data about increases in cheating on campus, "We all acknowledge one of the main ways students cheat is with their iPhones, cell phones, anything that can get the Internet or send text messages.

Trustees approve five year financial plan

As the world fell into a global recession Wheaton College introduced their strategic and financial plan - "Wheaton 2014: Transforming Lives to Change the World." As part of the plan Wheaton had outlined a new mission statement, as well as some ambitious goals for improving the college.

The necessity of a filibuster in judicial democracy

Of all the intricate elements of the United States Senate, that body which so esteems its traditions and precedents, the filibuster is the most disparaged and least understood. The filibuster is a shining example of the democratic process at work. It has its roots in the Roman Senate, where to block legislation, a senator could speak until nightfall, by which time the body was forced to adjourn.

Cooperation possible in bipartisan tax reform

Sources say that Senators Judd Gregg (R-NH) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are partnering in an effort that has not been seen in Washington since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan and former Senator Bill Bradley partnered to produce the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The 1986 legislation closed loopholes and special interest provisions festooned throughout the United States Internal Revenue Code and used the savings to drive the top individual marginal income tax rate down to twenty-eight percent, the lowest the top rate has been since 1929 when it was twenty-four percent on income in excess of $100,000.
