organizing an event to pay homage to Gandhi on Oct. 2, his birthday.
Guided by Professor Donna Kerner, the students prepared every aspect of the celebration, beginning with the invitations and ending with a discussion. The guests (including students, faculty, and staff) were welcomed into the lounge in Beard Hall with a scroll featuring a quote by Gandhi and encouraged to sign the guestbook.
Students then proceeded to indulge in a traditional South East Indian vegetarian feast. While enjoying their meal, guests were presented with a
thought-provoking slide show.
A discussion followed, led by Jonathan Kay '08, Nicholas ApRoberts-Warren '07, and Taylor Palmer '07. Kay proposed, "Does anybody find it ironic that we're having a feast in Gandhi's honor?"
The conversation became more serious, as some of the themes explored included poverty, non-violent resistance (satyagraha), and other ideologies initiated by Gandhi. Participants responded to questions drawing from personal experiences.
Several times during the evening, people voiced concern regarding the current problem of apathy in our country. Guests left with a heightened awareness that would hopefully lead them to continue discourses with other individuals.
The course is a Hewlett "Unity in Diversity" course aimed at student involvement in the community and the world.
