College is often thought of as four years of sex and promiscuity. One-night stands are common occurrences on college campuses nationwide - including ours.
The Journal of Sex Research recently completed a study on the prevalence of casual sex among college-aged women, concluding that one-night stands can cause feelings of depression.
The study found that 18% of women thought that their one-night stand would lead to romance, while only 3% of men did. The depressed feelings are a result of this disparity. The same study found that the casual sex in one-night stands is more likely to occur between friends or acquaintances than complete strangers.
These nights of no-strings-attached sexual fun lead to many awkward occurrences, the first being waking up next to a person who you may barely know. Many times this may make you want to run out the door without even saying goodbye. While this may stall the temporary embarassment of the morning after, it will only ensure the inevitable campus run-in to be more uncomfortable. It is much better to part amicably than with no words at all.
The walk of shame only adds to the awkwardness that can result from a one-night stand. We have all seen or been that girl wearing her crumpled outfit and heels from the previous night walking crookedly back to her dorm. Remember to bring sunglasses.
Though there is no successful way to avoid this embarrassing consequence, one can walk with dignity. Nonchalantly saying hello or smiling has the most positive outcome!
Remember to keep expectations light. Do not let yourself get blue by waiting for a phone call or his next move. A one-night stand is not meant to be the first step to a marriage proposal.
