The Loft was filled with an air of excitement last Thursday when Cosmic Jibaros took the stage as part of Wheaton's celebration of Latino Heritage Month. The Latin fusion band performed an eclectic set featuring French and English, but mostly Spanish tracks.
Their name, "Jibaros," is actually Puerto Rican slang for a peasant farmer.
Each of the six band members in Cosmic Jibaros brings a fresh element to the group. Their own interests have affected the bands varied repertoire, resulting in songs influenced by everything from gospel to funk, from R&B to pop-rock. The Bridgeport, Connecticut-based band has played together for four years, and is currently recording their second album.
At around 10:30pm, the band took the stage and immediately began rocking the Loft with their performance. A makeshift dance floor formed in the middle of the room, gradually filling with students who couldn't help but move and shake to the music. Those who were too shy to bust a move simply clapped their hands or tapped a foot to the beat.
Sarah Flanagan, '10, commented, "I really liked the unique rhythm behind their songs. It surprised me, it's not something you hear everyday."
One outstanding song was "Yo Soy Del Mundo," their album's title track. An unidentified French number was also particularly memorable, cleverly mixing French lyrics with an Eastern European melody.
Cosmic Jibaros added a new taste to the usual midnight munchies served up at the Loft, resulting in a unique and dance-worthy performance.
