Students beat the faculty by one point in a heated game last Friday to hep raise money for the alternative winter break trip to New Orleans.

Wheaton students, faculty and staff came together for a nail biting game of basketball on Friday, November 30. The event was coordinated and sponsored by the Alternative Winter Break Trip to New Orlean.

Members of both the Wheaton and Norton communities, were in attendance. Students and children paid $3 and other admits were $5. The Alternative Winter break group was also selling t-shirts, tickets for raffle prizes and baked goods.

Sarah Ackermann '10 who plans on attending the trip to New Orleans said, "From donations, food and t-shirt sales, raffles and admittance fees, the organization raised around $1,000."

The faculty and staff team, included athletic trainer Dave Cox, physics professor John Collinse, popular YMCA Area Coordinator Roland Brassard, and biology professor, Betsy Dyer. They proved to be an even match for the student team.

After the game, student participant Andre Mclaughlin '09 said, "Its always fun to participate in a good game of basketball, but playing to support a good cause makes it more satisfying. It's wonderful to know that Wheaton can provide relief and support for Katrina victims. This event is proof that helping others can be fun. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did."

The idea of a charity game and facult/staff involvement definitely enticed the student body to attend. Noemie Goff-Pochat '10 said, " I went because I knew it was for a good cause and I really wanted to see my Physics professor John Collins play. It was a really great game and the faculty only lost by one point.

Indeed the game was close; with a final score of 55-54, both defensive and offensive efforts counted. In addition to the riveting game, Wheaton's own dance troupe, TRYBE, performed two pieces at half time. They were energetic and very much appreciated by the crowd.
