The search to find a replacement for Dean of Students Sue Alexander has yielded three finalists, each of whom will have visited campus by the end of the week. Tom Dubreuil, current Associate Dean of students at Lehigh University; Donna Swartout, Associate Dean of Students at Merrimack College; and Margaret Hazlett, Associate Dean of Students at Bowdoin College, will meet with constituencies on campus including faculty, staff and students.
The Dean of Students search committee worked its way through about three dozen resumes in several rounds to refine what qualities it was looking for. Due to the importance of the position to the student body, three students were members of the committee: Ashley Arra '10, Paul Shapiro '09 and Ebony Williams '08.
"I think that we were listened to way more than I initially thought," Shapiro said. "[Student] opinions definitely mattered."
Tom Dubreuil spent two days on campus last week. Dubreuil is currently the Assistant Dean of Students at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania where he has worked for the past 11 years. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1990.
"The more I have learned about [Wheaton], the more attractive the opportunity has become," Dubreuil said last week at a luncheon with several members of the student body. "The reason I came into this field is to work with students." Dubreuil went on to add that, "as an administrator, there is nothing more rewarding" than being a part of students lives and academic careers.
While Dubreuil stressed that Lehigh has a sense of community, its size (about 4,400 students) and university status simply make it a different kind of school than Wheaton.
"I can't wait to see the other candidates," said SGA President Mike Zwolinski '08. "But I thought [Dubreuil] was strong, and he really understands not just the job but what it's like to be a student."
Lucas Mayer '11 echoed Zwolinski's praise. "I think [Dubreuil] understands his unique position…and that there are a lot of changes happening on campus."
At press, Swartout was scheduled to visit campus on February 27 and 28 and will be meeting with students on February 27 at 8 p.m. in the 1962 room. Hazlett will visit campus on Febuary 28 and 29 and will be meeting with student February 28 at 8 p.m. in the 1962 room.
