After a disappointing 2007 campaign, the women's lacrosse team hopes to rebound and put last years' struggles behind them. The Lyons have shown great improvement in all aspects of the game and are already very close to matching last year's win total of four games.
Some of their impressive wins include a dominating 19-4 win over Emerson College, an 18-3 to three win over the University of Dallas, and a very impressive win over Salve Regina University in which the Lyons went on an 11-0 run to finish the game with a 22-9 victory.
Third-year head coach Mary Jacobs has taken a different approach to her coaching methods this year, as her main goal is to bring the enthusiasm and zest back into the program.
"If we have a 4-12 season again, 4-12 is going to be completely different. Hopefully the wins and losses will take care of themselves if we are committing to the program, doing the basics, loving what we do, and wanting to play hard for each other" says Jacobs.
The team kicked off its season with a trip to Texas to test their skills. From all standpoints, it was a success. The Lyons won two games decisively, but more importantly began to discover their potential.
"It was good to play against those teams because it gave us a chance to start clicking" said freshman Abigale Magruder. "Those games kind of allow us to build up for the tougher games later in the season because they became an opportunity for us to see what we could do."
Leading the squad are the team's four captains who include Meredith Hurd, Sara Dimick, Alexa Jurczak, and Madeline Williams. Hurd, a two-time all-conference player, is no stranger to success as she ranks fifth in school history in goals. Jurczak will have a big responsibility, not only as team captain, but will be relied upon to create plays for her team. Jurczak has put up solid numbers over the years racking up a total of 52 goals and 11 assists.
With the team already showing significant improvements, Jacobs' new approach and game plan has been paying off.
"Everything we've done this year has been completely different from past years. To compete against the schedule we have, changes needed to be made. We went from five practices to six during the preseason" Jacobs explained. Certainly, the reinvigorated team will be hoping to carry these improvements throughout the season.
