As the regular season dwindles and the postseason is soon to begin, the Wheaton softball team is focused and ready for success. According to Coach Gina Loudenberg, "The goal this season was to win the NEWMAC and have a great experience." Wheaton's goals are attainable with a successful end of the season.

The second place Lyons, who are 12-4 in conference (28-12-0 overall), played first place Wellesley who have a 11-3 record (22-6-1 overall), in a double header Friday April 18th at home. Coach Loudenberg's squad split the two game set, losing the first 6-2 before rallying to take the finale 4-3.

The success of the team starts with its captains and senior leadership. The captains include third base Erika Marini, pitcher Jodi Moynagh, and catcher Alix Brozman all of whom are seniors. The other senior on the squad is utility player Audrey Poulton.

With seven freshmen on the team, these leaders are essential to team success. Coach Loudenberg says, "My seniors have dedicated themselves to the program for four years, training year round, doing fundraising year round, and keeping pace with all the traditions of the Wheaton Softball Program."

The intangibles are great but their performances have been even better. Moynagh has led the team to 16 wins with only a 1.04 ERA. Recently she even picked up a NEWMAC player of the week award. Poulton says of Moynagh, "She has really proven herself this year as our number one pitcher and is a dominator of her opponents."

No slouch herself, Poulton has the second best ERA of 1.53 while picking up team leading four saves. Captain Brozman says of her team, "This year, we've got the talent, and we've got the drive to be the best team in the NEWMAC."

These seniors and the other upperclassmen have performed consistently well. The seven freshmen on the team are lighting a fire in them to perform better and to be good examples of the historically dominant Wheaton Softball team.

Of these freshmen Loudenberg says, "this may be the most talented freshmen class I have recruited. They not only possess the skill but they have so much heart and desire to excel." The seniors have helped to mold these freshmen to carry on the torch after they have graduated. For now the Lyons are prepared to finish their season on a high note. They would like to see success and do this through pitching, hitting, and everything else that comes with softball.

The regular season ended on Saturday April 19 away at Endicott with a doubleheader. The Lyons were unfortunate to be handed two defeats at the hands of a very capable Gull offense.

Postseason play begins Wednesday April 23 with the first round of NEWMAC tourney play. Brozman says, "I never want us to look back on our season and say 'if only...'" The Lyons will give their all as they enter into the tournament.
