Dougherty Sculpture Update

Issue date: 9/17/08 Section: Arts & Culture
With mere days remaining until completion, Patrick Dougherty's sculpture now boasts three layers: the basic frame and support from larger trees, interwoven sticks to provide the shape and strength, and a top layer to smooth the texture.
The artist found inspiration for his masterpiece in sugar cones and canes, visible in the four towers perched atop the structure.
The completed piece is intended to be interactive. The artist plays with the surprise of this model describing that "you can go through the outer shell and then oh! You can go even further in to these interior spaces."
In the spring, David Fox plans to direct Shakespeare's Macbeth and hopes to incorporate the sculpture into the set. Dougherty is excited about "this double use that will bring [the piece] into another context," truly making this a collaborative project.
The unveiling of the sculpture and a lecture by Dougherty will be held on Friday, Sep. 19 at 7 pm in Weber Theatre. '
