The team has a lot of young talent that they bring to the court for every match. After a great last season, the team appears to be on the rise again and another trip to league playoffs looks to be in sight.
Wheaton's team is lead by captains Liana Merrill '09 and Lauren Kraus '10; senior Caitlin Farr also brings leadership to the young squad.
The core of the team is comprised of underclassmen. The four sophomores are Sam Andreacchi, Kristen Hunt, Becca Rose, and Kaitlyn Stokes. Emily Davisson, Miranda Howitt, Irina Ionkina, and Lauren McGrath are the four freshmen.
These young players bring a lot of experience from different backgrounds. This puts the Lyons in a position to be an excellent, strong team.
Davisson '12 said, "I instantly felt the chemistry that this team has. We are a fairly young team with no where to go but up, and I look forward to that."
Ben Read, who is starting his third year as the head coach of the Wheaton Volleyball team, finds himself fully immersed in building a quality team. He led the team to a great season last year with 22 wins, the most for the team in 11 years, and a tournament appearance.
In their first home game, against Salve Regina, the Lyons beat the Seahawks, sweeping them in three games (25-22, 25-19, 25-19). They controlled the court by having good communication between the older, experienced players and the new ones, as well as having solid passes.
They had a total of 31 kills, ten of which were put down by Miranda Howitt '12. Emily Davisson and Kristen Hunt led the Lyons in digs with 18 and 17 respectively; the team had a total of 69 digs in total. Overall it was a great match and a stellar way to start the season at home for the volleyball team.
This year the team will aspire to perform even better than they did last year.
Games are played in Emerson Gymnasium located in the Haas Atheletic Center. The next home game will be Tuesday, September 23 against Babson at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27 the Lyons will take on Emmanuel at 2:00p.m. Tuesday, October 7 they'll challenge MIT on their home turf at 7:00 p.m
