Iron & Wine: Mellow listenings

Simply stated: Iron & Wine has a voice that puts the angels to shame. In a genre dominated by blaring rock and fast-paced rap, his lullabaic melodies are a refreshing departure from the ordinary. Iron & Wine, whose real name is Sam Beam, recently displayed his talents at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel and left the audience singing his praises.
First walking into Lupo's can only be described as walking through the doors to a national beard convention. Fans both young and old sported Iron?& Wine's trademark beard; some donned fake facial hair but many grew out their scruff simply for the occasion.
Opened for by Blitzen Trapper, Beam performed alonside his sister, Sarah. An unbeatable duo, his airy voice was complemented perfectly by her soothing harmonies.
The performance began with intimate acoustic selections, accompanied only by vocals and, later, a piano. Acoustic performances portray Iron & Wine at his absolute best, perfect in simplicity with every note reverberating through the venue like a haunting phantasma.
After adhering to tradition, Iron & Wine instilled variety into the concert by bringing out his band. Instruments such as the electric guitar and bass offered the music a completely new feel. Among favorites such as "House by the Sea" and "Flightless Bird American Mouth," Beam introduced two fantastic new songs.
In between selections, he joked with the audience and answered to the random cries of "I love you!" His personality proved to be as captivating as the music.
Though the concert was brief, every moment was well worth the admission fee. After a standing ovation that raged into forever, Beam returned to perform "Upward Over the Mountain" and the audience to clapped along in rhythm.
