It is surprising to find that many would prefer not to speak of global warming. Perhaps it is the controversy surrounding the emerging studies or fear of its implications.

Like it or not, we are currently in a period of sunspot minima, which has historically been associated with climate cooling, or ice ages. Why then, is the Earth's climate not in a period of cooling?

The scientific community has recognized global warming as anthropogenic (human induced).

Take this quiz to see how much you know:

1) The US EPA recognizes that:

a. Human activities have been causing changes in the Earth's atmospheric composition and atmospheric CO2 levels have been rising since pre-industrial times.
b. The build-up of atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases is largely a result of the burning of fossil fuels for energy.
c. A definite warming trend of 1.0-1.7 °F was observed from 1906-2005, during which warming occurred in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and over the Earth's oceans.
d. Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are likely to remain intact for decades or centuries after emission indicating that these gases will continue to build-up for at least the next few decades.
e. Increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are associated with climate warming.
f. All of the above.

2) Atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are 27% higher than the highest previous levels in the past _______ years.
a. 1,000
b. 50,000
c. 250,000
d. 650,000

3) ____ of the 21 hottest years have occurred in the past 25 years.
a. 4
b. 10
c. 19
d. 20

4) The United States, containing approximately 4.5% of the world's population, is responsible for about ____ of the global CO2 output.
a. 50%
b. 25%
c. 10%
d. 5%

5) The number of people worldwide that could be displaced by more intense drought, floods and sea level rising by 2080:
a. 1 million
b. 20 million
c. 200 million
d. 500 million

It is time to take action! Social change will affect climate change and it starts with you, the conscious consumer.

I leave you with this quote by David Orr from his book Earth in Mind; "It makes far better sense to reshape ourselves to fit a finite planet than to attempt to reshape the planet to fit our infinite wants."
