In order to address the problem of smoking on campus, Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) sponsored a panel to discuss Clean Air initiatives on campus.

The panel was held in Hindle Auditorium on Nov. 20 and was planned to make students aware of the issue of cigarette smoke and waste on campus.

Josh Begley '10, the student head of CAC, began with a presentation that outlined the areas on campus with the most discarded cigarette butts. The two most notable places were the front steps of McIntire Hall and the balcony of Keefe Hall.
According to Begley, many students have complained about that they cannot open their windows and keep the smoke out of their rooms.

Begley proposed that the campus designate certain areas, such as the entry ways of dorms and the library steps, as non-smoking areas as well as to move ashtrays away from the dorms.

Begley noted that moving the ashtrays will also serve to reduce the number of cigarettes that students smoke because it would change their "routine."

Associate Dean of Health & Wellness and Student Health Services Director Craig Andrade addressed the Office of Health and Wellness's recent initiative to ban the sale of cigarettes in the Old Town Hall Bookstore.

According to Andrade, the initiative was meant to "realign our values of health with our practices." It is more important, said Andrade, to "walk our talk" than to generate revenue from bookstore cigarette sales.

Also on the panel were two students, one a former smoker and one who admits that he still smokes. While it is compelling to limit the amount of smoke on campus, according to panelist Andrew Howard '09, the campus must remain aware of students' right to smoke.

Josh Begley is not the only leader of CAC. Kelly Robinson '09 as well as Elise Barrar '10 (I beleive Caitlin McDonald '10 is too, but I'm not positive) are all co-coordinators of the campus branch. (Continued…)

I find it interesting to note that the term "Clean Air initiatives" is used to describe the proposals of the CAC. Being unsure as to this being the author's term or the CAC's term, I won't pass blame. (Continued…)

"Clean Air initiatives" was a phrase used by the author. It's never been used by anyone in CAC in relation to our proposals.

Let people smoke if they want.
