Time. Money. Addiction. These words can be synonymous with the life of a fantasy sports addict. The sports craze is ruining lives all over the nation. Forget about fan loyalties, people have fantasy leagues to win. Last week, I as a Patriots fan was secretly rooting for the Jets running back Leon Washington to have a good game. Well, he did and the Pats lost. The loss hurt but I was well on my way to win my fantasy football match-up for the week. Another bittersweet moment in the life of a fantasy sports junkie.
Many people do not realize the time it takes to have a successful fantasy sports team. Before whatever sports season it is, you need to scout players, know injury reports, have knowledge of potential breakout players, etc. This process alone can take hours. Luckily for some, there are magazines that people can spend their money on with all that data.
After studying and becoming familiar with every member of a professional sports league, the most important day of a fantasy gamer comes into fruition: the all-holy draft. Nowadays the fantasy gamer is lucky; they can hide behind a computer screen or even let the computer draft for them.
Back in the day, a draft would consist of an all day event that would usually involve a group of men picking the players that would make them a league champion. This change has made the world of fantasy sports a mainstream phenomenon.
Now that the draft is complete, the season actually begins. Everyday is important in the life of a fantasy gamer. Hours are spent checking current depth charts, watching games for injuries of players on their teams, and trying to pick up undrafted talent to help bolster their lineups. This weekly ritual, even daily for many, has become commonplace in the life of a fantasy gamer. Now picture the thousands of people that do multiple fantasy sports leagues at the same time. Right now basketball and hockey have started, football is already here, auto racing is soon to finish; all of these sports have fantasy sports leagues that anybody can play. If someone is involved with two different sports, that can easily be two hours a day spent looking at sports news and statistics.
