CIT Group Inc., one of the nation's leading funders of small and medium-sized businesses, filed for the fifth largest bankruptcy in U.S. history. The company said none of its operating subsidiaries would be affected by the filing, and they could continue operations.
An American man won the New York City Marathon for the first time since 1982. Meb Keflezighi, 34, ran the 26.2-mile course with a personal best time of 2:09:15.Keflezighi emigrated to the U.S. in 1987 and became a U.S. citizen in 1998.
Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president, Hamid Karz, is revealed to have received regular payments from the CIA for much of the past eight years. Ahmed has been found to be a very large player in Afghanistan's opium trade.
Abdullah Abdullah, the main challenger to President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzi, announced his withdrawal from the runoff election scheduled for Nov. 7. Abdulla who is the leader of the National Front, the largest opposition bloc, said that he is abstaining from the election because of the rampant fraud that he believed would effect this election the same way it had the previous one held on Aug. 20, 2009.
Nine military personnel are presumed dead after a Coast Guard C-130 plane and a Marine AH-1 Cobra helicopter collided Thursday off the coast of San Diego. Search-and-rescue efforts were called off on Sunday.
Facebook, the preeminent social-networking Web site, was awarded $711 million Thursday, winning a lawsuit filed against self-proclaimed "spam king" Sanford Wallace for hacking into Facebook accounts to distribute phishing spam though user profiles.
