Many people do not even know where the recording studio at Wheaton College Community Station (WCCS) is, but it recently went through a $25,000 remodeling project. It is hidden next to the Loft and near the elevator on the first floor of Balfour Hood.

According to co-general manager Sean Penchoff '10, the recording studio originally was four small rooms with multi-colored walls. It is now two large rooms - an office with a desk and computer as well as a recording studio with sound equipment, which are now painted light blue.

Buildings and Grounds brought in Miller Construction Company and Fernandes Electrical Services, who remodeled from the summer until Homecoming Weekend in October.

Penchoff said, "We came up with drawings and planned a design, they took a look at the space, and we came up with a plan of how to do it affordably," he said, "They did a phenomenal job of putting this together."

Chris Romilly '10, co-general manager, said the painting, installation of new equipment, and carpets, as well as tearing down walls, costs $25,000. "It's been here since this building was built in the late 80s. It's been a lot of different things - a game room and the old broadcast studio before it moved down the hall."

He added that this renovation is part of the Student Affordability Plan. Musical clubs, such as Voices United to Jam (VUJ) and the Blend as well as dance group, Paraiso Latino, and spoken word group, iSpeak, are able to record at a fraction of the price of competing recording studios in the area.

The recording space is separate from the broadcast studio, which is near the gym and home of the rock, hip-hop, and talk radio station, 96.5 FM and streaming on the web at www.wccs.wheatonma.edu 24/7 with over 85 DJs.

"We have bands and artists come in to do voice-overs, podcasting, any kind of audio recording, and live broadcasts of bands on-air. Anyone at Wheaton or from surrounding towns is welcome to use the studio," Penchoff said.

To make an appointment, e-mail wccsevents@gmail.com. Sara Smith, staff member in advancement services, and Stephen Mathis, professor of philosophy, serve as advisors to the student-run organization. Rommily and Penchoff also wanted to acknowledge the Student Government Association (SGA), Dean Jack and Student Life for helping to make this renovation possible.

It's really cool that there's a recording studio on campus. It's a very unique opportunity for students.
