While many Wheaties around campus can be seen in the same duck boots, few realize it even was Fall 2010 Fashion Week. Is it a curse of the Wheaton Bubble or a sign of where fashion is going these days?
With so many fashion blogs, celebrity stylist and user created Web sites, such as lookbook.nu, to look to for fashion inspiration, the Internet has changed who decides what is fashionable from something that was very elite to something accessible by all. Even an 11-year-old from the Midwest can blog about fashion, and become popular enough to be invited to Fashion Week.
As for Wheaton, more of an academic setting, readings about Proust and Plato doesn't really leave time to look up things on Proenza Schouler and Zac Posen, so where do students find fashion inspiration?
"Basically, when it comes to fashion, I just go to the stores and pick out what I like, I don't spend too much time researching," said Anna Wetterhorn '11, "And even if I did, I wouldn't be able to afford or replicate anything on the runways, so what's the point?"
Even though 'High Fashion' isn't a priority on Wheaton campus, there are still many students on campus who love the creative process of designing clothes.
Griffin Patria '12 is one example, as he is working on a fellowship with Professor O'Dell to recreate the looks of various Royal Queens. "I have always loved clothing and sewing, but the 'Fashion World' has never appealed to me. Anywhere that a size 6 is plus size is too cutthroat and dramatic for me. I just love creating wearable
art. "
So Wheaton College may not be as fashionably stunted as it may seem, it has the ingenuity to decide its own style method. With Wheaton fashion shows such as the Anything But Clothes Show and International Fashion Show coming up this semester, Wheaton may become slaves to the runway, but on their own terms.
